# Competitors

> The products your workspace competes with, which Agentrail uses to draft head-to-head prompts and to tell competitors apart in agent answers.

Competitors are the products your customers compare you with. Setup research proposes them and you can add, edit or remove them at any time. Agentrail uses the list to draft your setup and to tell, in every run, whether an agent chose your product, a competitor or something else.

## What the list is for

* **Drafting your setup.** Setup drafts your preference prompts from the Brand Vault and this list, including head-to-head prompts that name a competitor as the alternative. See [Setup](/docs/guides/setup).
* **Reading your results.** On [Agent Preference](/docs/guides/agent-preference), each product an agent chose is labelled **Your product**, **Competitor** or **Not listed**. A product counts as a **Competitor** only if it is on this list.

Agentrail recognizes a competitor by its **Name**, its **Other names** and its **Website**, including the website's subdomains.

## Where to find it

In the sidebar, open **Product** and select **Competitors**. During setup, it is the **Competitors** tab of **Review what research found**.

The list shows each competitor's **Name** with its logo and description, its **Website** and its **Other names**. If there are more than fit on one page, select **Load more competitors**.

## What research proposes

During setup, research proposes competitors while it fills in the Brand Vault. Before you see the list, it:

* leaves out your own product, matched by its website, name or aliases;
* drops any candidate without a usable public website;
* keeps one entry per website.

Review the list at **Review what research found**, and edit it before you select **Continue to drafting**. Drafting uses the list exactly as you leave it.

## Add a competitor

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the form">
    Select **Add competitor**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Fill in the fields">
    * **Name**: required, up to 200 characters.
    * **Website**: required. A public `http` or `https` website, such as `example.com`. Query strings are dropped.
    * **Other names**: optional. One per line, up to 50 names of up to 200 characters each.
    * **Description**: optional, up to 1,000 characters.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Select **Add competitor**. You see **Competitor added.**
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Put every name an agent might use for the competitor in **Other names**: a short name, a former name or its package name. A product an agent chooses that matches neither your product nor a competitor shows as **Not listed**.
</Tip>

## Edit a competitor

Open the actions menu at the end of the competitor's row and select **Edit**. Change any field in **Edit competitor**, then select **Save changes**. You see **Competitor updated.**

You can replace the **Website** but not remove it. Emptying **Other names** or **Description** removes them.

## Delete a competitor

Open the actions menu at the end of the row and select **Delete**, then confirm with **Delete competitor**. The competitor disappears from the list.

<Warning>
  Prompts that name a deleted competitor keep their text as it is. A head-to-head prompt still names it as the alternative until you edit or delete that prompt on [Agent Preference](/docs/guides/agent-preference).
</Warning>

## When the list changes

Whenever you add, edit or delete a competitor, Agentrail checks earlier runs again in the background against the updated list. Your results then reflect the list as it is now.

## Who can do what

Everyone in the organization can view the list. Only Admins can add, edit or delete competitors. A Member sees no **Add competitor** button or row actions, and an empty list says **An Admin can add competitors.** See [People and roles](/docs/guides/people-and-roles).
